The Sons of Discontent are often barraged with requests for advice on issues about bombing on stage. Our problem is that since neither one of us have ever had a bad show, we are uniquely ignorant on the topic. But that never stopped us from having an opinion, and this week we tackle the question:

How long should a comic feel ashamed after a bad show?

Johnny Mac: I think a comic has to have two perspectives and learn how to use them both. The first is: “I am God. Everything I say is gold. The audience can either profit by this, or be destroyed.” The second is: “Everything I am doing could be wrong.”

What The Yuck?! Schedule

What The Yuck?!- Charlottesville's only comedy open mic- is happening twice a month. On the first Tuesday of the month it will be held at The Southern (103 S. 1st Street) and on the third Tuesday it will be held at the Main Street Arena (the ice rink at the end of the Downtown Mall).

For performers sign up for both shows starts at 8:30 pm. The shows starts at 9pm and there is no cover charge for either show.

The Crackers Are Coming!

The Crackers of Comedy Tour is an Underground Indie Comedy Tour based out of the Southeast United States. The tour will take comedians Matt Ward and Joe Pettis over 3,000 Miles to 18 different cities over 20 days starting on Friday Feb 18th in Wilmington, North Carolina and ending on March 8th in Greenville, SC. Along the way the duo will share the stage with comedians from each city they visit. No Agents, No Big Budget, just two comedians, one Toyota Corolla and lots of laughs and mayhem along the way.

Joining Joe and Matt for the evening are Charlottesville comics Jim Zarling and Leah Woody.

Just thought I’d post about a great show coming to Charlottesville this week. Allan Goodwin takes the stage at The Southern with some of your favorite CCR regulars. If you’re in the area and can make it, we’d appreciate the support. Shows like this are the next step in the comedy evolution of Charlottesville, stepping out of the bars and into the music venues. Help us show the promoters in town that stand up comedy can be more viable that another bluegrass concert.

Tickets are $6 and doors open at 10pm. Tickets are available online or at the door.

Hey gang, looks like this might be the last post at our Roundtable blog as we move into our new digs over at cvillecomedy.com. The new site will have comedy shows from all over town, my new podcast Comedy 'Ville as well as a live feed of the CCR twitter accounts and bios for all our comics.

We have a great May lined up for you. We start out on Wednesday, May 12th with our monthly show at Bel Rio (407D Monticello Road). The show starts at 9:30 and there is no charge.

On Saturday the 15th the Wu Prov is back with an all new show at The Bridge (209 Monticello Road). That show will feature local favorites The Raging Bonitas, as well as the debut of Bardville- the world's only 2 man improvised Shakespearean play. It will also feature the Charlottesville debut of 20/20- 20 improvised scenes in 20 minutes.

On Saturday the 29th we hit the Taphouse (12th and Main) with our monthly show. The show starts at 10 and there is no cover charge. Local favorites Kat Radley and Anthony McBrien return to the 'Ville to kick ass on this show.

Starting in June keep an eye out for our open mic nights on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Got 5 minutes of comedy, come on out. Want to see what new stuff your favorite comics are working? This is the place to be.

Hey gang, sorry I've been lax in my posting- totally buried in work for the Charlottesville Comedy Festival which was an amazing success. We had packed houses every night at Bel Rio and on Saturday night we raised almost $1000 for the food bank at our benefit show.

Our next show will be April 24th and will be headlined by EJ Edmonds. If you haven't seen EJ you should definitely come on out- he's been rocking it in NoVa for a while and has been looking to come back to central VA. The show is 10 pm at the Taphouse and as always, there is no cover charge.

On Wednesday, March 10th make sure you hit Bel Rio for our monthly gig. As always this show features The Ville's hottest comics working on their newest material. Rumor has a few special guests from Richmond might pop in to help us rock the house. The show starts at 9:30 and as always, there is no charge.

Matt Ward takes the stage with the CCR on March 27th at The 12th Street Taphouse. Matt has been been a fixture in the North Carolina comedy scene and now makes his home in Knoxville, TN. Come check him out along with some of your CCR favorites. The show starts at 10pm and you know how much it'll cost you to see the show.

Special Notice: Our friends at the Wu Prov Academy and Bent Theatre will be holding an improv open mic on Monday March 8th. Anybody interested in performing-be at The Bridge at 7pm for warm up. Improvisers will be paired up randomly to perform scenes based on audience suggestions.

February Shows

The Charlottesville Comedy Roundtable is excited to announce a jam packed February schedule.

The fun kicks off in Waynesboro on the 4th with the monthly stand up comedy contests at Oasis. The show starts at 9 and there is a $5 cover charge.

Then on the 6th the Wu Prov takes the stage for an improv show at The Bridge (209 Monticello Road). The show starts at 8pm and there is a suggested donation of $10. Part of the ticket sales go to support The Bridge.

On the 10th the CCR takes the stage for their monthly showdown at Bel Rio (407 Monticello Road). This month we have our usual stable of comics from The 'Ville along with several comics coming up from Richmond to perform. The show starts at 9:30 and there is no cover charge.

The Wu Prov is back on the 26th with an all new night of mayhem at Rapunzel's in Lovingston. Keep your eyes open, you might catch some stand ups on stage as well. The show starts at 8pm and tickets are $5.

Finally the CCR closes the month out with their show at the Taphouse (12th and Main). Great comedy, great beer and no cover. The show starts at 10pm and the party lasts all night.

Hey gang, I know we've already posted our January show update but have a great new show lined up in Harrisonburg on Friday, January 22rd.

Cuchi Guido's is the new name for comedy in The 'burg and they'll be hosting the Roundtable for their grand opening. The show starts at 7:30 with live music and the CCR taking the stage at 8:30.

I Got Bad News And I Got Good News

It is with great sadness that the CCR has to announce the end of our open mic nights at the Buddhist Biker Bar and Grill. Due to tough economic times the Biker had to close for good in December. We would like to thank Loren and his staff for taking a chance on a bunch of guys who said "Hey, we're funny, do us a solid." Thanks you guys, and please stay in touch.

However, the bible says that when God closes a door he opens a window (check the index under "opportunity"). And what a window has opened. It appears that news of the CCR has reached the Carolinas and the comedy King of the region, King Rich, has reached out to headline the first of our new monthly shows at the 12th Street Taphouse.

The King has taken the Carolinas by storm and with his new alliance with the Roundtable we suggest you get ready to Laugh It Up!

Hey gang, the Roundtable is going to keep things rolling in 2010 with a whole new batch of jokes. On January 13th we continue our run at Bel Rio with our monthly showcase. The show starts at 9:30 and features some of our best comics doing their funniest material. There is no cover charge.

Then on January 15th the Roundtable teams up with the Wu Prov Academy for a show at The Southern. There will be live music from the Academy's Raging Bonitas as well as comedy from CCR regulars and some special guests. The show is $5, but we're so confident that you'll love us that you can pay us whatever you think we were worth after the show.

The CCR continues to bring the comedy to Charlottesville with three December shows:

Dec 9th- The Roundtable brings stand up comedy to Bel Rio in Blemont. The show is free and starts at 9:30

Dec 18th- The Wu Prov Academy presents an evening of experimental improv. Improvised Shakespeare, music and stand up comedy are on the agenda. The show starts at 8pm @ Th e Bridge also in Belmont. Pay what you can, with a suggested donation of $10.

Dec 31st- Last Night '09. Join us at the 12th Street Taphouse for an evening of stand up comedy, music and improv. The show starts at 8pm and runs until 2am. Leave the kids at home (it is New Year's Eve after all) and have a few drinks and laughs with the funniest people in Charlottesville. The show is free (the beers and special menu are not).

Fall Show Listing

Hey gang, the CCR and WuProv Academy have a ton of shows coming up this fall.

The Roundtable has their stand up on October 27th and November 24th at 8pm at the Buddhist Biker Bar & Grill (20 Elliewood Ave). On November 7th at 10pm they will host their third showcase event at the 12th Street Taphouse (12th and Main). The Showcase features our best comics doing their best material and promises to be a blast. Both shows are free but get there early as seats fill up fast.

The WuProv brings their martial arts infused improv to Mary Baldwin College (9pm) on October 31st for a special Halloween show. Tickets are $3 at the door, but free for MBC students. On Novenmber 6th the Wu returns to Rapunzel's in Lovingston (8pm) with brand new improv forms and challenges, that show is $5.

And finally the Academy returns home to The Bridge in Charlottesville on November 13th at 8pm. To help support the Arts in Charlottesville there is a suggested donation of $10 for this show.

Hey Gang, sorry about the lack of updates- summer vacations and general laziness has hit. But we've shaken off the doldrums and we're back with new comedy, new comedians and a new venue!

Coming up Tuesday July 21st is our monthly open mic comedy cavalcade at the Buddhist Biker at 20 Elliewood Ave. The show starts at 8 but I recommend coming early, getting some great food and getting your drink on!

Then on Saturday August 1st the CCR is having their first comedy showcase. Several of our top comics will be performing longer sets of their best material at the 12 Street Tap House (located on 12th Street). The show starts at 10 promises to kick all kinds of ass.

Johnny is from suburban Richmond but insists that he hates malls and isn't a racist. He also talks about the time he spent in Iowa. Uhm...it's actually more interesting than it sounds.

Ruth Morton, one of my favorite improvers and fan of the Roundtable sent me this clip of Bill Hicks, one of the true geniuses of stand up comedy. The clip is from his last performance and is the same material that David Letterman refused to air in October of 1993.

Inauguration Fun Facts!!!

After witnessing all the pimp and circumstance (Get it? Obaba's black.), it might be hard to believe that the only legal requirement of the incoming president is to take the fifteen word oath of office. All the balls, all the parades, all the celebrities, all the speeches, and all the bad poetry are only unnecessary layers that have accumulated over time. This morning, as I watch the movie Ghost, (Nobody puts baby in a corner, except for cancer.) I thought I would take some time to impart to you some of the lesser known inaugural facts and traditions:

When one president relinquishes power to another, there is always a private letter left in the Resolute Desk for the incoming Commander in Chief. This is not a letter full of presidential secrets and wisdom. It is actually a story. Each President adds his own paragraph. The latest addition to the story has turned it into a picture book.

The tradition of giving a speech after swearing in was started by George Washington. He thought that, given the occasion, he should say a few words to the American people. He also started the tradition of jerking off beforehand to calm him nerves. This has been repeated by every president save Lyndon Johnson, who had to jerk off after swearing in, due to the short notice of JFK getting shot in the head.

Since the inception of photography, the incoming and outgoing presidents have posed for a photo together on Inauguration day. This photo is taken in the doorway of the Oval Office and is staged as follows: The door frame divides the picture into two halves. On the right, the outgoing President is standing in the Oval Office, leaning against the wall. His hand gently placed on the wood paneling next to his face. On the left side, the newly elected President is leaning against the hallway wall in much the same fashion. Divided. Yearning.

The new President and First Lady have hot "Mr. President" sex. The outgoing President gets a hand job in a helicopter.

Before the inauguration, the soon to be President and his wife visit the White House to have a cup of coffee with the former President. This year Obama will be choosing tea over coffee. If the incoming president has young children, this meeting is also the first official opportunity he has to say, "Stop sweetie. Daddy's running the country. Go play with that old stuff." This year Obama will be saying this to Bush, rather than his own children. You see, they are better behaved.

Alright, now that I have shared these traditions with you, I need to share something else. I wrote half of this, and then came back the next day and wrote the other half. Why? Because, as I mentioned above I was watching the movie Ghost when I started writing this. "Hey, Bill. Then what happened?" Well, baby birds, I finish watching Ghost, and then it came on again. Let me make this clear, so we're all on the same page about what happened yesterday.

I WATCHED THE MOVIE GHOST TWICE IN ONE DAY, BACK TO FUCKING BACK.

Naturally, I was drunk the second time and couldn't finish this blog entry.

Welcome To The Roundtable

Thanks to everybody who made our first shows such a success. To the fans who dangerously packed our shows and to the Buddhist Biker Bar and the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar for hosting our shows we appreciate your support.

The Roundtable is taking December and January off to work on some other projects and polish our stand up material. Don't worry, we'll be back with another show in February. As soon as the dates are set we'll let you know.

Once we make it through the holidays we're hoping to put on more shows, so if you're interested in joining the Roundtable and getting on stage don't hesitate to contact us.
